Natural deodorant test: What holds up best in sweaty weather?

It's safe to say we have a love/hate relationship with natural deodorants. We love that they don't contain duct-blocking aluminum or other harsh ingredients - deodorant is applied to an area with tons of glands, after all.

But (but!) we hate smelling like BO. And unfortunately, many of the natural deodorants we've tried over the years haven't held up to our sweat.

Past experiences aside, we decided to test a new wave of non-antiperspirant deodorants made with safe ingredients. All the varieties we tried required application by fingers, which is slightly more time-consuming than a stick; thankfully, we got used to it in no time.

Natural deodorant roundup

Here are the test results - thanks to our pits for their cooperation!

Soapwalla Deodorant Cream in Original

Scent: This deodorant smells like a typical health food store find (think: lavender and tea tree oil). But the scent is subtle and refreshing after application, and it doesn't scream, "I'm wearing natural deodorant!"

Application: We like the wide jar and the creaminess of this formula; there's no need to warm it up with our fingers before applying. As advised on Soapwalla's website, we avoid putting it on immediately after shaving because baking soda can be irritating (and one of us has sensitive pits).

Staying Power: We're happy to report no signs of BO with this deodorant. The scent stayed fresh for a few hours, although it did fade as the day wore on. It also kept us surprisingly dry.

Our rating: 4/5

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant in Bergamot + Lime

Scent: We love bergamot! This deodorant has a bright and friendly lime-rind smell.

Application: Schmidt's turned out to be our least favourite formula: it's hard, crumbly, and needs to be warmed up before application. The jar is also narrow, making it harder to reach in for a dollop. On the plus side, it comes with a cute spatula.

Staying Power: Disappointingly, this deodorant didn't hold up for either of us. The scent faded super quickly - BO alert!

LOVEFRESH Natural Cream Deodorant in Sweet Orange Patchouli

Scent: One of us loved the patchouli scent, and one of us felt it was too hippie-ish (but not overpowering). Luckily, it comes in four other scents.

Application: This cream goes on oh-so-smoothly - you don't even have to wash your hands after applying! (Note: LoveFresh introduced a stick format and a non-baking soda version for sensitive pits. After trying the stick, we actually preferred the application of the cream formula.)

Staying Power: This deodorant outperformed the rest! The scent stayed fresh all day, and we made it through sweaty activities (e.g., dodgeball) with no sign of BO. Bonus: Made in Toronto!

Primal Pit Paste in Thyme and Lemongrass

Scent: Neither of us loves this scent, which reminds us of a cleaning product. Thankfully, there are other scent options.

Application: This formula has a slightly grainy feel (baking soda again), but still goes on smoothly and easily. The company also has a stick option.

Staying Power: We experienced some sweat smell with this formula, but the scent held up in most cases. Let's just say we wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it out for a night of dancing.
